Welcome to the University of Iowa, where we are deeply committed to our mission as a public research university. Across campus, we are united in a common purpose: to work side by side to discover and share new knowledge and to prepare the next generation of leaders to help solve our world’s most pressing problems. Our passion for this mission makes the University of Iowa a truly special place, and it motivates us to provide our students with opportunities to learn and grow matched by few other institutions. As we are a nationally ranked research university, our students learn from professors who are among the most brilliant minds in their fields, people who are expanding the horizons of our knowledge and developing new solutions for the problems of our world.

In these changing times in higher education, we are thinking in new ways about recruiting students from Iowa and beyond who will thrive here at the UI; about building on the excellence of our undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs; about enhancing our leadership in research and public service; and about operating more efficiently. Some of what we do and how we do it will change in the years ahead, but we will remain true to our mission as a top-ranked research university that places a very high value on educating our students and serving the people of Iowa. One thing won’t change, though: for all of our faculty and staff, students, patients, and visitors, we will remain a place where people from all walks of life are welcomed and well-served.

The faculty, staff, students, and supporters of this university are incredibly talented and resourceful people. Our retention and graduation rates have reached all-time highs. The academic qualifications of our first-year students continue to improve. Extramural research funding is growing, and we are enjoying record levels of philanthropic support from our alumni and friends. Our academic and our athletic programs continue to be ranked among the best in the country. And our hospital and clinics continue to be recognized for providing some of the best care in the world.

I am not only proud of our present accomplishments, but I am also optimistic about our future. We know how to work together and find innovative solutions to institutional and societal challenges. In so doing, we have come out stronger as a university and have improved the lives of people from across Iowa, the nation, and the world. That's the Hawkeye spirit.

To our university community, I offer my best wishes for another successful academic year. To our friends and visitors past, present, and future, I thank you for your support and invite you to come to campus and see for yourself our current achievements and exciting future possibilities!
