Dear Hawkeyes,

As the spring semester draws to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible accomplishments, resilience, and community spirit that define the University of Iowa. Whether you’re finishing finals, preparing for graduation, or looking forward to a well-earned break, I am proud of every one of you.

Over the past year, higher education has faced a range of challenges, including rising operational costs, shifting federal priorities, changing demographics, evolving workforce demands, and increasing public scrutiny. As we work together to face and meet these challenges, it is important that we focus on the stories of our students … stories that remind me why our university is such a special place.

Research wasn’t necessarily on Bailee Kamerzell’s radar when she began her journey at Iowa. The second-year student from Sioux City is pursuing a BS in psychology and a BA in criminology, law, and justice. It was a behavioral neuroscience class during her first year that sparked her interest in research. That same course introduced her to the Wessel First-Gen Brain Research Workshop, which she joined in August 2024.

“I wasn’t sure if I’d apply because I knew it would take me out of my comfort zone, but I knew it’s what I needed to do to get on the path that was going to lead me where I thought I wanted to go,” Bailee said. “And it was amazing.”

Bhavana Bhat, a PhD student from India, shared just how meaningful it is to be part of a caring university. After attending a recent graduate recognition event, she said, “It’s really motivating to see that we have such a large, supportive community. Especially at this time, it’s so important to feel that our accomplishments are acknowledged, appreciated, and celebrated. Graduating is a huge milestone, and it means so much to have it recognized.”

These stories are just a glimpse of what happens every day on our campus. You—our students, faculty, and staff—bring the energy, curiosity, and determination that make this community thrive. You come from all corners of Iowa, the nation, and the world, and together, you create something truly extraordinary.

As we wrap up the semester, I hope you take time to celebrate your growth, thank those who supported you, and look ahead with excitement. And to our graduating students—congratulations! We can’t wait to see where your Hawkeye spirit takes you next.

Enjoy your summer, stay safe, and Go Hawks!

Warmly,

Barbara J. Wilson
President, University of Iowa
